In 2010, the United Nations Department of Public Information (now the Department of Global Communications) announced the launch of United Nations Language Day, which celebrates multilingualism and cultural diversity and promotes equal use of the six official languages at the United Nations: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Among them, the International Chinese Language Day is set in the "Grain Rain" of the 24 solar terms of the lunar calendar to commemorate the contribution of Cang Jie, the "ancestor of Chinese writing", to the creation of Chinese characters during the Grain Rain season and the birth of Chinese characters more than 5,000 years ago. April 20, 2022 is the Grain Rain solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar and the 13th International Chinese Language Day. The Language and Culture Center of Jiangsu University actively responded to the initiative of Sino-Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education and Chinese Language Alliance to hold the "International Chinese Language Day" in 2022, and meticulously planned a series of Chinese-themed activities to share the charm of Chinese language with teachers and students of the university. At the beginning of March, the International Chinese Teaching in the Language and Culture Center began preparations. All the full-time and part-time Chinese teachers and administrative staff worked together to carry out online and offline Chinese activities centering on the themes of "Sharing Chinese learning experience", "reciting Chinese classics", "Seeking the charm of Chinese characters" and "Singing Chinese songs together", which attracted the active participation of the whole school.
The Language and Culture Center organized international students and Chinese teachers to gather together in the cloud and share their valuable experience and fruitful results in learning Chinese in the post-COVID-19 era. International students speak freely. Ge Anmi from Mexico said that although she could not go back to China at present, she insisted on watching Chinese movies, reviewing the Chinese language through lines and understanding the Chinese culture through plots. Whenever she found cultural differences, she humbly asked teachers for help, so her Chinese language has been improving. Anuar, who is from India, said there is no shortcut to learning Chinese. The only secret is "self-discipline", and he reads passages aloud and writes Chinese characters every day. He also recommended some practical teaching resources and apps to overseas students. Overseas students also displayed their Chinese characters and short videos online.
The Language and Culture Center recommends that international students read poems and texts in spring to follow the elegance of ancient Chinese. The students responded enthusiastically and submitted their own reading works. Of these, three are particularly stunning: First, Roger from Zimbabwe and other six international students recited the A Moonlit Night on the Spring River. The six students dressed in Chinese costumes, moved and changed the scenery among the flowers and trees, beside the flowing water, read the poem, and showed the artistic mood and style of the famous poems of the Tang Dynasty. Second, Ma LAN from Ghana recited Nan Xiang Zi: Airing My Feelings upon Climbing Beigu Pavilion of Jingkou, She climbed the Beigu Mountain, overlooking the Yangtze River, and sang poems recalling the past, expressing her understanding of the famous poems of the Song Dynasty incisive and vividly. The third is the Moon in Poetry shared by Pearl from Ghana. Reciting the moon in Chinese poetry is her favorite. She found that the moon in the Chinese poems varied from glittering and translucent to lonely and sad. The diverse moon images provided her with the wings of imagination for her Chinese learning. Ms. Tang Min, director of the International Chinese Teaching Department, said she hoped all students would not waste the beauty of spring, savor the beauty of words and cheeks, appreciate the vitality of spring between heaven and earth in the rhythm of Chinese poetry, enhance their interest in learning Chinese and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.
The Language and Culture Center invited Yang Jing, a representative of overseas students, to speak about his understanding of Chinese characters. As the champion of the "2021 My Story of Chinese Hanzi", the champion of the Jiangsu Province Foreigner Speech Contest and the image ambassador of China-Asean Culture and Tourism, Yang Jing chose his favorite Chinese character "仁". Combining his own experience of studying Chinese, medicine and guqin, Yang explained the triple meaning of 仁-- great love, responsibility and harmony, and expressed his determination and courage to contribute to the exchanges between Chinese and African civilizations. Yang Jing's speech inspired the enthusiasm of foreign students in Jiangsu University to learn Chinese, and also inspired his African compatriots, who responded warmly.
The Language and Culture Center encourages international students to sing Chinese songs to show their artistic style. The King called Me to Tour the Mountains sung by the students of Jiang University is humorous. They sang as they walked around the campus, adapting the words with ease and the lyrics are a refreshing mix of life stories and learning Chinese. Jing Mei from Ghana and SAVI from India performed Your Answer and You Look So Nice When You Smile respectively. Their standard Chinese pronunciation, sweet voice and soulful performance won the love and admiration of the whole school and netizens.
The first celebration of International Chinese Language Day was held at the UN Headquarters in New York on November 12, 2010, and its impact has grown over the years. Today, International Chinese Language Day has become a window for people to understand Chinese culture. Jiang Yonghua, deputy dean and director of the School of Arts (Language and Culture Center) of Jiangsu University, said that this year is the third time that Jiangsu University has held the International Chinese Language Day. As the direct department responsible for Chinese teaching and language and cultural competitions for international students in our university, the Language and Culture Center has carefully organized a series of activities themed as "International Chinese Day" to create a platform for all teachers and students to exchange their Chinese learning experience on this important day and jointly create an atmosphere of learning, loving and using Chinese and continue to enhance the international influence of Chinese.
